California Candidate Privacy Notice

Airbnb is committed to protecting the privacy and security of the information we collect and to being transparent about the purposes for which we use your information. This Notice describes the categories of personal information we collect about California residents who apply or are recruited for a job with us or one of our affiliates, and the purposes for which we use that information. This Notice does not create or form part of any contract for employment or otherwise.
I. CATEGORIES OF PERSONAL INFORMATION WE COLLECT.
When a person applies to join our team, we may collect the following categories of personal information during the application and recruitment process. We primarily collect personal information directly from you, but some personal information may come from other sources, including from recruiters, your references, and our service providers that support the application and recruitment process. We collect and use this personal information only as permitted or required by, and in compliance with, law.
- Identifiers and Other Nonpublic Personal Information, such as contact details, including personal email address and phone number, driver’s license number or state ID card number, passport number, and other unique personal identifiers (for example, a number assigned to you as an applicant).
- Educational, Professional, and Employment-Related Information, including current employment, past employment, education history, professional licenses, references, information that references provide us about you, and education transcripts.
- Legally Protected Characteristics, including, but not limited to, disability, gender, or gender identity, race, national origin, military or veteran status, and sexual orientation.
- Background Information, including previous employment, criminal, and credit information as is necessary for us to employ you.
- Device Information, Including Internet or Other Electronic Network Activity Information, such as browsing and job search history and information regarding interactions with websites and applications, our systems, and networks, including information collected by tracking technologies used on our websites and applications, and in connection with computer use during the interview process, including any candidate assessments.
- Audio, Electronic, Visual, or Similar Information, including videos or photographs that may be captured through facility operations, including guest check-in, facility security footage, and audio or video recordings of interviews.
- Employment Eligibility Details, such as immigration status or other information that would allow us to verify your work authorization status, and information necessary to support you or your household’s work permits or resident status, as applicable and necessary.
Some personal information we collect may be considered sensitive personal information, including government-issued identification numbers and details about race, religion, citizenship, immigration status, health, or sexuality.
II. PURPOSES FOR WHICH PERSONAL INFORMATION IS USED.
We process candidate personal information for the following purposes:
- Determining your eligibility for a position with the company, including processing your application, assessing your fit with us or for a specific role, conducting interviews, carrying out background and reference checks in accordance with law, and keeping records related to our hiring process;
- Protecting the company against malicious, deceptive, fraudulent, or illegal activity, including by detecting security incidents, and taking appropriate action concerning those responsible for that activity;
- Fulfilling other business and operational purposes, including relocation in connection with employment or related to mergers and acquisitions, and any other changes to corporate structure;
- Complying with our legal obligations, including those related to employment, tax, immigration, and anti-discrimination laws; and
- Managing potential public safety risks, to individuals, including applicants, who come onsite, and the population generally.
We may also process personal information where required or permitted by law, regulation, court order, or another public authority request, or for any other purpose with your consent or at your direction.
III. DISCLOSURE OF PERSONAL INFORMATION.
We may disclose candidate personal information to the following third parties:
- Affiliates. Airbnb has affiliates, and certain services are managed centrally by one or more affiliates for all or part of the group. We may disclose personal information with our affiliates for any of the purposes described above.
- Service Providers. We may also disclose your personal information to the service providers that support our recruitment and hiring process. Our service providers may, for example, help us recruit candidates, process job applications, facilitate our communications with candidates, perform background checks or assessments, support video interviews and candidate evaluations, and onboard successful candidates.
We may disclose candidate personal information for the following purposes:
- As part of a Business Transaction. We may also disclose your personal information to another company as part of a merger, acquisition, divestiture, restructuring, reorganization, or other sale or transfer of some or all of our assets (“Business Transaction”) to that company.
- To Comply with Law, Respond to Legal Requests, Prevent Harm, and Protect Our Rights. We will disclose personal information where required by our policy, applicable law, in response to a legally compelled disclosure, or as needed to exercise or defend our rights or those of others.
IV. YOUR RIGHTS.
As a California resident, you have the right to request:
- Deletion of personal information we have collected from you;
- Correction of inaccurate personal information;
- Access to certain personal information; and/or
- Knowledge about the personal information we collect about you, including the categories of personal information and sources, and our purposes for collecting personal information.
We do not sell or share the personal information of California candidates for cross-context behavioral advertising. We limit our use of sensitive personal information to legally permitted purposes.
California residents may exercise privacy rights by emailing TalentPrivacy@airbnb.com. Someone you authorize to make privacy requests for you can use the same email to make a request. If you or your authorized agent submit a request, you may be asked to provide personal information that we will match against our records to verify your identity before responding to your request. We will not retaliate against you for exercising your lawful rights.
V. RETENTION PERIODS.
We keep personal information as long as necessary or allowed by law, based on its intended purposes as disclosed to you at the time of collection. The criteria used to determine our retention periods include:
- The duration of our relationship with you (for example, personal information of successful candidates will be retained in our employment records) and for any subsequent period during which it is necessary to retain your personal information for legitimate business purposes, such as workforce management, business protection, or defense against legal claims;
- Whether legal, tax, reporting, auditing, or other requirements obligate us to keep records about your candidacy or employment for a specific period before deletion; and/or
- Whether retention is appropriate based on our legal obligations or interests or those of others, including when retention is aligned with applicable statutes of limitations, litigation, or regulatory investigations.
VI. CHANGES TO OUR PRIVACY NOTICE.
Airbnb reserves the right to amend this Notice at our discretion and at any time. When we make changes to this Notice, we will post the updated Notice on our website and update the Notice's “Last Updated” date.
